Wildwood Deli is just off the square on Market Street in downtown Athens Alabama. When Matthew and Rhonda Fisher were looking for a place for there new deli they visited Wildwood which was for sale. They fell in love immediately. Rhonda says finding a place close to the square and with the history the deli has was a dream come true. I guess you could call it love at first sight. The small deli seats ten people inside and has tables outside with plenty of shade. The deli is small but has a friendly, homey atmosphere.
Matthew and Rhonda have plans – their days begin early at Wildwood Deli with the frying of bacon. As the smell floats out to the street and to the offices above, Matthew works to get everything ready for the day. Rhonda gets busy fixing her famous “Banana Pudding” something you don’t want to miss.
They offer traditional deli food, such as hot pastrami, grilled cheese, salads and Texas Melt. They are also the only place in Athens where you can get “Gigi’s Cupcakes.” Friday they offer gluten-free cupcakes. Their soups and salads are gluten-free. But not the “Banana Pudding” Rhonda says it just wouldn’t be the same.
So what are their plans for the future? Matthew says he sees more than one or even two more locations. He knows it will be hard work but he has plans for the future. After visiting with him I can see how much he loves what he does. Yes, he is “making magic happen in a shoebox.”
Matthew and Rhonda want all of their customers to know that when you open the door to Wildwood Deli you are stepping into their kitchen and you will be treated like family. So if you haven’t do, or if you have, drop by again soon….
